Map shows you the cables that help keep the internet 'alive'
Have you thought about what it takes for the internet as you know it to work? Well, the map you can see above gives you an idea, showing the hundreds of fiber optic cables stretching for thousands of miles under the sea.The map was created by telecom analyst Telegeography that, even if it does not have 100% accurate geography data, gives you an idea of the scale of this infrastructure. As The Independent notes, cables have been installed over the last few decades primarily through private enterprise.Just as you do not have an idea of the infrastructure needed to keep the Internet 'alive', there is the fear that these cables may be cut by certain states. Russia is singled out as one of the suspects."Can you imagine a scenario where these cables are cut or disturbed, which would have an immediate and potentially catastrophic effect on both our economy and our way of life?" Warned former US Navy Admiral Jamis Stavridis in end of last year.
