Pixel 8a: Google releases new Pixel A series smartphone with 256 GB of storage, 120 Hz OLED display and updates beyond 2030

Google is now selling the Pixel 8a, a mid-range option that arrives a few months before the Pixel 9 series. Further narrowing the gap between the Pixel A series and Google's flagship smartphones, the Pixel 8a features various upgrades from last year's Pixel 7a.

Google has quietly unveiled the Pixel 8a, a new mid-range option that comes in Aloe, Bay, Obsidian and Porcelain finishes. In short, the Pixel 8a brings numerous innovations to the Pixel A series, including a 120 Hz OLED display and a 256 GB storage option. Moreover, the Pixel 8a packs a 4,492 mAh battery that supports 18 W wired charging and should be in line for seven years of updates.

For reference, Google continues to equip its Pixel A series smartphone with a 6.1-inch display that outputs at 1080p. However, the panel delivers up to 2,000 nits peak brightness. Meanwhile, the Pixel 8a makes do with the 64 MP main, 13 MP ultra-wide-angle and 13 MP front-facing cameras from its predecessor. Nonetheless, there are upgrades in other areas, such as a Tensor G3 chipset that Google complements with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 flash storage.

The Pixel 8a is already orderable in markets where Google sells Pixel smartphones. As pre-release leaks suggested, the new mid-range smartphone starts at €549 in the Eurozone with 128 GB of storage, or £499 and $499 in the UK and US, respectively. Alternatively, the Pixel 8a can be ordered with 256 GB of storage for €609, £559 and $559, but only in its Obsidian finish. Please note that Google will not begin shipping Pixel 8a orders until May 14.
