Starlink satellite internet surpasses 1.5 million subscribers
SpaceX announced that its Starlink satellite internet service has surpassed 1.5 million customers worldwide. Starlink announced that it reached one million subscribers about five months ago. Gaining another half a million subscribers a short time later was met with a very good response.
Starlink first appeared in 2015. But it wasn't until 2019 that SpaceX started deploying the first low orbit satellites powering its internet service. The company has plans to put 12,000 of these satellites into orbit, which would be more than enough to bring the entire world into coverage. Just earlier this week 56 new satellites using the Falcon 9 rocket placed. Thus, the number of Starlink satellites exceeded 4000.
The company charges $120 a month for its satellite internet service with speeds of up to 100 Mbps. A one-time payment of $599 is required for the hardware needed to capture the signals. It currently offers full service in North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines and serves most of South America. Pending regulatory approval in India, SpaceX also plans to expand the service to some African countries in 2023, including Angola, Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique.
This satellite internet service is used not only in homes, but also in commercial flights, large moving vehicles such as caravans and motorhomes. Finally, it should be noted that Starlink invited some of its users to try its global roaming service for $200 a month earlier this year.
