APPLE

M3 chip for the iPad Pro and next-generation Macs will arrive in 2024

The next-generation M3 chip to be released by Apple is expected to be faster than the M2 and offer a longer battery life, and many users are expecting it. However, it seems that we will have to wait until next year to see the performance of the M3.

Recently, Twitter user Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) claimed that the M3 chip for the iPad Pro and next-generation Macs will arrive in 2024. It appears that TSMC, which manufactures the chips, is unable to meet Apple’s demands due to “yield issues”.

Revegnus, known as a technology enthusiast and semiconductor geek, has leaked rumors about Apple before. Recently, it has been claimed that Apple is developing a 14-inch iPad Pro with an M3 Pro chip, targeting a 2024 release.

In February, DigiTimes reported that Apple had placed an order for all of TSMC’s 3nm supply. Apple’s A17 Bionic chip, which will be installed in the new iPhone 15 Pro, is rumored to be manufactured using a 3nm process.

The news of the delayed M3 release helps clarify the Mac lineup that could launch next year. First of all, there are rumors that a 15-inch MacBook Air will be released, and this product is likely to be equipped with an M2 or M2 Pro. The M2 MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro launched almost a year ago, and will continue to stay in the lineup until the M3 launches in 2024. The M2 Mac mini, released in January, does not require an upgrade. The M1 iMac is definitely a product that needs an upgrade. At the time the M3 is released, it will be a product that will be almost 3 years old.

As for the iPad, Apple upgraded the iPad Pro to the M2 in October 2022. In 2024, it is expected to be updated not only with the M3, but also with a lineup reorganization and the introduction of the 14-inch iPad Pro that Revegnus insisted on.

Apple’s M3 is expected to be the first PC chip made using the 3nm process. The 3nm process has a higher transistor density, which significantly improves performance over the current improved 5nm process used for the M2. The M3 will deliver more processing power at relatively low power, which can be a far cry from the performance gains that typically improve year over year.
