SAMSUNG

Samsung Galaxy S23

Company will no longer unintentionally close apps in One UI 6.0

Samsung will launch One UI 6.0 later this year and that software update contains an important change: just closing apps will then be a thing of the past. The South Korean company is taking this step at the request of Google.

Samsung will soon no longer just close apps...If you have a smartphone from Samsung or Xiaomi, for example, you've probably noticed: apps that you haven't used for a while are closed without mercy. Manufacturers do this because they also consume some power in the background. By 'killing' the apps, the battery should last longer.

That's probably not a problem for most people. It can lead to unpredictable behavior and the loss of any entered data. That is why Google wants to draw a line with Android 14, the latest version of the operating system. The search giant would prefer that background processes work the same on all Android phones.

Samsung has already promised cooperation and will therefore no longer unintentionally close apps in the future. This change is baked into One UI 6.0. That is the latest software shell from the manufacturer. It is based on Android 14 and will be released later this year.

Only apps optimized for the most recent version of Android will adhere to this behavior. Whether other manufacturers follow Samsung's example remains to be seen.

For now, One UI 5.1 is the most recent version...At the moment, Samsung is still working on transferring its more recent smartphones to One UI 5.1. That is the software that is standard on the Galaxy S23 devices. It introduces some new photography tricks and a fresh weather widget that warns you when a storm is approaching. There are also improvements for DeX, Samsung's desktop environment, and Notes.

This migration seems almost complete. At the end of April, the Galaxy A51 received an update to One UI 5.1.
