LG Display leading the way for Tandem OLED adoption in future Apple iPhones

A new report has shed more light on the state of Apple adopting Tandem OLED displays across its iPhone lineup. While LG Display and Samsung Display were previously rumoured to be considered for Tandem OLED production, it is apparently the former that is pushing Apple to bring brighter OLED displays to iPhones before the end of the decade.

LG Display is increasingly pushing Tandem OLED panels into new markets, having debuted the technology last year in the Dell XPS 13. Shortly afterwards, Apple began offering equivalent panels inside the current iPad Pro 11 and iPad Pro 13 with much higher peak brightnesses than conventional OLED tablet displays.

According to a recent report, Apple is now considering adopting Tandem OLED panels across future iPhones. As we discussed at the start of the month, these panels would move Tandem OLED technology onto having all subpixels in the front layer and blue subpixels in the rear to maximise brightness while reducing power consumption. Supposedly, LG Display is actively recommending Apple bring Tandem OLED technology to iPhones, with an industry source quoted by DealSite adding:

It is understood that LG Display is continuously promoting Apple to install tandem OLED on Bar-type iPhones...We aim to supply tandem OLED to iPhone models to be released in 2028. However, it is up to Apple whether or not to install tandem OLED.

In other words, we will be left waiting until the iPhone 20 or iPhone XX at the earliest before Tandem OLED panels will reach the iPhone. In the meantime, Tandem OLED technology is now reaching the gaming monitor market through two panel types. For reference, early examples include the Asus ROG Swift OLED PG27AQWP-W, Gigabyte MO27Q28G and the LG UltraGear OLED 27GX700A.
