Pixelsnap: Google's ''MagSafe'' looks set to disappoint users a lot
When the first rumors about “Pixelsnap”, Google's new brand of magnetic accessories for the future Pixel 10 line, emerged, expectations grew. Many believed that Google would finally integrate a system of magnets directly into its phones, similar to Apple's MagSafe, creating a practical and integrated ecosystem of accessories.
However, the latest information brings a bucket of cold water to those who already dreamed of this convenience. Apparently, Google will follow a much more timid approach, which will force you to use a specific case to take advantage of the new technology.
The bad news is that, contrary to what was expected, the new Pixel 10 will not have the magnets necessary to align and attach the accessories integrated into its body. Instead, Google has chosen to place these magnets in the official cases that will be sold together with the cell phones.
This means that in order to use a charger or stand from the new Pixelsnap line, you will have to have your Pixel 10 protected by one of these special cases. Without it, the accessories simply won't be able to attach magnetically to the device.
This decision aligns Google with other Android manufacturers that, despite supporting the new Qi2 wireless charging standard (which includes a magnetic ring), have avoided integrating magnets directly into their devices.
The reason behind this widespread hesitation is unclear, but the result is a user experience that is inferior to that offered by direct competitors. By not having the magnets on the phone itself, you lose the freedom to use the magnetic accessories with the device “naked” or with any case that was not specifically designed for this purpose.
What to expect from Pixelsnap accessories...Information indicates that the Pixelsnap charger will have a design very similar to Apple's MagSafe charger, with a disc shape that magnetically attaches to the back of the phone (as long as it is with the appropriate case).
In addition to the charger, a new desktop stand is expected to be launched. This stand should follow the design line of the current Pixel Stand 2, but with an important novelty: it will have a slot designed so that you can fit the new Qi2 charger, transforming it into a magnetic charging base.
Google will, of course, introduce its own line of cases with the built-in magnets, but it is very likely that other accessory brands will also launch their own compatible versions. These products should be officially revealed during the launch event of the Pixel 10 line, which is rumored to be scheduled for August 20.
Ultimately, the arrival of an official magnetic ecosystem is good news, but its implementation dependent on cases leaves a bitter taste and the feeling of a missed opportunity for Google.
