End of the line for Warzone Mobile

Activision has released news that, for many players, sounds like the end of the world: Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile will be discontinued. Through a communication on the game's official account on the X platform (formerly known as Twitter), the company announced that it will cease all updates and remove the title from the Google Play Store and the App Store. If you were still curious to try it out, you have one last and very short chance, as the game will be permanently removed from stores by the end of today, May 19, 2025.

Activision's official justification for this drastic measure is that Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile "did not meet our expectations with mobile players, unlike what happened with PC and console audiences." For the more attentive gaming community, this decision, although sudden in its execution, may not come as a total surprise, especially if we consider the game's troubled path since its announcement.

The mobile adaptation of Activision’s popular battle royale game saw the light of day in March 2024, after a long two-year wait since its initial announcement. Fans waited with great anticipation, only to receive a game that, in practice, had little more than a year of life on the market.

This period was marked by consistent complaints regarding poor optimization, which resulted in a subpar gameplay experience on many devices, and excessive battery consumption, a critical issue for any self-respecting mobile title. These technical issues seem to have undermined the game’s ability to retain a solid and satisfied player base, in contrast to its huge success on other platforms.

If you are one of the players who already have Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile installed, or if you rush to download it before the May 19, 2025 deadline, Activision assures that you will still have access to the game. In addition, its “cross-progression of shared inventories using existing content” will be maintained, meaning that you will not lose what you have already achieved.

The publisher added that the servers will remain online for the time being and that players will be notified of any future changes. However, for hardcore fans, this statement does not offer a solid guarantee that Warzone Mobile’s servers will remain active indefinitely, leaving a shadow of uncertainty over the long-term future of access to the game.

In an attempt to soften the blow and encourage existing players to transition to other titles in the popular franchise, Activision has outlined a compensation plan.

The company has said that by logging into Call of Duty: Mobile using your Activision account, you will be able to redeem double the amount of COD Points that you had on your Warzone Mobile account. Additionally, they are promising “other fantastic rewards,” although it has not been specified what these extra bonuses might be. This is one way of trying to keep players within the Call of Duty ecosystem.

Here comes the bad news for those who have invested real money in the game. Activision has been clear in stating that any unused COD Points and any items already purchased in Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile will not be refunded. This no-refund policy is understandably a sore point and one that will surely leave many players disappointed, especially those who have invested significant amounts of money in digital content that may soon have very limited or uncertain usefulness.
