Sony FX2: the hybrid video and photography segment

Sony has announced the FX2, a new compact camera that is part of the Cinema Line, aimed at professionals and content creators who value versatility and technical performance.

The launch of the Sony FX2 responds to the growing demand for equipment capable of combining cinema features with advanced photography features, in a portable format.

The model features a 33-megapixel full-frame sensor, artificial intelligence processor and tiltable OLED electronic display, features that aim to optimize the capture experience in multiple contexts.

The Sony FX2 also stands out for its integration of dynamic stabilization and 4K recording options, seeking to meet the demands of independent productions, advertising and streaming.

The Sony FX2 uses the 33MP Exmor R sensor, the same one found in models such as the a7 IV, allowing images to be captured with high dynamic range and adjusted depth of field. The image processing system, supported by artificial intelligence, offers automatic recognition of subjects, including people, animals and vehicles, without the need for manual selection. This approach is designed to speed up the work of operators in dynamic environments.

Video recording reaches DCI 4K resolution at up to 60 fps, with 10-bit 4:2:2 color sampling and 7K oversampling in full-frame. For situations that require slow motion, the FX2 supports 120 fps in Full HD. Five-axis optical stabilization, complemented by AI-assisted modes, contributes to stable images in motion.

The compact design of the Sony FX2 maintains the ergonomics and robustness required for heavy-duty use. The OLED electronic viewfinder, tiltable up to 90 degrees, makes it easy to frame shots from different angles, while the presence of a dedicated lever allows for quick switching between photo and video modes. The camera supports recording to CFexpress Type A and SDXC cards, and offers multiple connectivity options including HDMI, USB-C, LAN and Wi-Fi.

Compatibility with professional accessories, such as the XLR Handle Unit for advanced audio capture, and the inclusion of menus inspired by the VENICE line, reinforce the integration of the FX2 into demanding workflows. The active ventilation system allows for long periods of continuous recording without risk of overheating.

The Sony FX2 is aimed at professionals who need hybrid equipment capable of meeting both video and photography demands. The feature set aims to facilitate content production in fast-paced environments such as news reporting, advertising or documentaries. The announced price is approximately US$ 2,700 for the camera body, with availability scheduled for July 2025.

The introduction of the FX2 expands Sony’s offering in the professional compact camera segment, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to technical solutions adapted to different creator profiles. The new model seeks to position itself as a versatile option for those who value the integration of cinema technology in a portable and flexible format.
