There are rumors that the focus of iOS 18, the next version of the iPhone operating system, is to bring features based on artificial intelligence (AI). But these features may only arrive (or run well) on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, wrote Bloomberg's Mark Gurman on X (formerly Twitter).
The next version of the iPhone operating system, iOS 18, will have features based on artificial intelligence (AI). However, these features may only be available or work well on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman;
Apple plans to use a combination of on-device and cloud processing for AI, but customers will need the latest, most advanced devices to fully take advantage of the new features.
The A17 Pro processor has faster CPU and GPU cores and a new 16-core Neural Engine capable of 35 trillion operations per second, plus RAM increased from 6GB to 8GB;
Requirements for Mac and iPad will be more inclusive, with the M1 chip as the minimum threshold. This covers 2020 Apple Silicon Macs and 2021 iPads Pro or later models, guaranteeing at least 8GB of RAM – which could be the main limiting factor for these devices.
Apple is expected to use a combination of on-device and cloud processing to make the AI work. Even so, customers may need the brand's latest and most advanced devices to be able to use these new features.
This means that, to use all the new features of iOS 18, users must have iPhones with the A17 Pro processor, which is only present in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models (the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models have the A16 chip).
The A17's minimum requirement may be, in part, a result of product marketing segmentation, with Apple increasing the appeal of higher-end models. And, in part, the result of technical requirements.
The A17 features significantly faster CPU and GPU cores and a new 16-core Neural Engine capable of 35 trillion operations per second. Additionally, the on-chip RAM has increased from 6GB to 8GB.
The expected system requirements for Mac and iPad seem a little more inclusive. According to Gurman, the limit could be the M1 chip. This would date back to the 2020 Apple Silicon Macs and the 2021 iPad Pro, or later models.
With the M1's limit, all iPad and Mac models would have at least 8GB of RAM available, which could end up being the main limiting factor. If the power of the Neural Engine were the bottleneck, only the latest M3 or M4 chip would have a Neural Engine as powerful as the one found in the iPhone 15 Pro.
