The Surface Laptop 6 appears to be almost here in its consumer guise, with Microsoft having presented 'for Business' models last month. Based on recent Geekbench listings, Microsoft will pair the Surface Laptop 6 with a Snapdragon X Elite (X1E-80-100) chipset and 16 GB of RAM as a more powerful alternative to the Surface Pro 10.
Roland Quandt has stumbled across what could be the consumer version of the Surface Laptop 6 on Geekbench. For context, Microsoft released the 'for Business' version over a month ago. In previous years, Microsoft barely distinguished consumer and business variants of its Surface Laptop and Surface Pro machines. However, the Surface Laptop 6 for consumers promises to feature not only different processors but also a revised design.
Based on previous rumours, this version of the Surface Laptop 6 will ship with a display that has thinner bezels than those on the Surface Laptop 6 'for Business' or the Surface Laptop 5 (curr. $799.99 on Amazon) with rounded bezels. Additionally, the Surface Laptop 'for consumers' is said to contain a haptic touchpad, plus a second USB Type-C port like its 'for Business counterpart'. If recent Geekbench listings are accurate, then Microsoft will pair the Surface Laptop 6 with the mid-tier version of the Snapdragon X Elite, the potential performance of which we have covered in a separate article.
Please note that Geekbench does not refer to the Surface Laptop 6 by name. Instead, it lists the name 'OEMBR OEMBR Product Name MFG', which tallies with Microsoft's recent Surface codenames. Incidentally, 'OEMMN OEMMN' powered by the Snapdragon X Plus recently surfaced on the same benchmarking platform as a probable candidate for the Surface Pro 10. At any rate, these Geekbench results suggest that Microsoft will offer the Surface Laptop 6 with 16 GB of RAM, which could be the baseline for other machines like 'Snapdragon Edition' versions of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14S Gen 6 and Yoga Slim 7. Currently, Microsoft is rumoured to have scheduled the release of the Surface Laptop 6 for May 20, a date that is also rumoured to serve as a showcase for the Surface Pro 10.
