Ireland investigates Twitter "reduction" URL system
Twitter is being investigated for allegedly collecting user data through its link shortening system, t.co, without disclosing how it does this research. The investigation comes following a complaint from a UK professor, Michael Veale, who accuses the microblogging of refusing to hand over all the data collected when Veale clicked on links in other people's tweets. According to Fortune, the social network claimed that "providing this information would require a disproportionate effort."It is recalled that, in the light of the RGPD, technology companies are obliged to provide all the details they have about a particular user, if they so wish. In this sense, Twitter is being questioned by the Commission for the Protection of Data of Ireland (DPC, in its original acronym). The entity, which is responsible for monitoring social network policies, has revealed that it "initiated a formal legal investigation" into Michael Veale's complaint to examine whether "Twitter has complied with its obligations in relation to the subject matter of its complaint ", As well as to determine whether there has been a violation of the provisions of the RGPD.Twitter's link shortening system allows the platform to measure how many times a link has been clicked and helps combat the spread of malware through rogue links. However, these parsing services may also pose a significant risk to privacy when used in private messages.
